So, you’re newly betrothed and looking for things to check off your to-do list when you get engaged. Getting engaged can be daunting. There are so many different lists, books, magazines, and binders that you need to keep up. There are so many people trying to give their input. You are probably very overwhelmed. Immediately after you get engaged, talking dates is necessary. Of course, your venue’s availability will probably be the major deciding factor, but at least pick a month, or at the very least, a season that you want to have your wedding in. It’s so important to come up with a guest list before you even attempt to search for venues. Even if you can’t come up with a finalized guest list, at least picking a number that you want to keep the guest list under will help you tremendously in your planning. The last thing you want is to fall in love with a venue that doesn’t hold the amount of guests you’re expecting!

Before you start spending any money, make sure you set a budget. Besides picking a date, picking a budget is one of the first tasks you should do before you plan any other aspect of your wedding. There are so many expenses that pop up that you may not even think of at the beginning of the wedding planning, that it’s best to come up with a set-in-stone budget beforehand.
Right after you get engaged, pick out your wedding party with your fiancé. Although you may know exactly who want to be your bridesmaids, and you may have been selectively picking them out since you were a young girl, your fiancé may want his sisters in the wedding party, like you may want your brothers involved. Chances are that your families will be on the edge of their seats, so figure it out before people start asking awkward questions!
Book the venue as early in advance as you can. It may go without saying, but the earlier you book your venue, the more leeway you’ll have when it comes to dates. Plus, if you’re having a summer wedding, you won’t get a very good look at the venue if it’s the middle of winter.
