Consider the setting and atmosphere you’re hoping to create on your wedding day. Short wedding dresses are fun and flirty. They are a great choice if you’re getting in a more casual setting. Planning an outdoor or beach wedding? A short wedding dress eliminates any worry about dirtying the bottom of your dress. Vintage lover? A tea-length lace wedding dress looks sweet and retro. Headed to City Hall? A little white dress is chic and sophisticated. Planning to dance the night away? Nothing says «party» like a sparkly little number.
The most universally flattering and versatile length for a hem hits just around the middle of the knee cap. Tea length or longer usually looks best on taller brides. If you’re planning to wear a mini dress, be mindful of how much leg is exposed and make sure you can comfortably walk, sit and dance without worrying about a wardrobe malfunction.
If you’re self-conscious about your arms but love your décolletage, a dress with sleeves and V-neck or sweetheart neckline covers just where you need it. A short, swingy shift dress can camouflage trouble areas around the middle while showing off lean limbs. Go sleeves or strapless to show off a toned upper body. Select a style with a nipped in waist to show off a feminine figure. Most importantly, it’s all about balance: if you’re showing more leg, opt for a little more coverage on top or pair longer skirt if your dress is more revealing on top.
While short wedding dresses work year-round, in warmer seasons (or climates), a short wedding dress can keep you from overheating. Winter brides should consider adding a pretty cover-up and other layers for extra warmth.
A veil is the ultimate bridal accessory, and if you’re planning to wear one with your short wedding dress, opt for a blusher or a style that hits at your elbow or higher. A short veil will complement – not compete with – your dress. You can also skip the veil altogether and add a special hair accessory instead.
With a short wedding dress, your shoes will really be on display, so pick a pair you truly love. A heel is great for lengthening your overall look but the most important thing is to choose a style that you’ll feel comfortable in all day (and potentially night.)
Make sure your legs are silky smooth for the big day and don’t forget to moisturize. To make gams look slimmer, add a dusting of bronzer or highlighter down the center of your leg. If you’re wearing sandals or open-toe shoes, treat yourself to a pedicure or at least some fresh new polish.
