1

Be Realistic

If your wedding is six weeks away, there is no way you’re going to miraculously (or safely) shed 20 pounds, no matter how badly you want to. Realistically, you can expect to lose no more than 2 pounds per week, so if you want to lose that 20 pounds, plan for it to take about 10 weeks. Being realistic about what you can accomplish in the time you have is my most important, and has earned the top spot, on my list of weight loss tips for your wedding, for a reason – it’s absolutely vital!

2

About Your Gown…

If you’ve already bought your gown, don’t fret. If you bought it at your current weight, it can always been tailored down once you’ve lost weight (give your seamstress a heads-up so she can schedule your fittings). If you bought it too small, hoping you’ll lose weight before the wedding, take a long hard look at how much weight you’ll have to lose to fit into it (and look good), and decide right now if it’ll work. Most gowns can be let out a little, but remember, white, especially shiny white, can be cruel to a girl who still has 5 pounds to lose. Isn’t it better to look absolutely gorgeous in a size 8, than look like you’re stuffed into a size 6?

3

Tone Your Arms

Since most brides, even in winter, are opting for strapless or skinny-strap dresses, it’s important to tone your arms, even if you’re not trying to lose weight, per se. Add a round of arm-specific exercises to your daily routine, like triceps dips and push-ups. Aim for 2 sets of 15 each, every day, included with your normal workout routine.

4

Tone Your Tummy

Most of us think of skinny jeans when we think of muffin top, but you’d be surprised how many wedding gowns seem designed to show it off! Along with toning your arms, be prepared to tone your tummy and core before your wedding. Even if your gown doesn’t show off every ounce of muffin top, your honeymoon bikini will! 5

Fiber is Your Friend

The idea that carbs are somehow bad for you, especially when you’re trying to lose weight, is a myth. In fact, one of the most important nutrients when you’re dieting is fiber, and that’s a carb! Remember, then, that fiber is your friend, especially healthy when it’s consumed in fresh fruits and veggies or in wholesome whole grains. It’ll keep your digestive system functioning properly, and it’ll keep you feeling fuller, longer.

Ban Diet Soda

According to research by The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, dieters who drink diet soda are much more likely to GAIN weight – not lose it! – than dieters who skip soda altogether. Amazing! So if you’re slamming Diet Coke like there’s no tomorrow, trying to lose weight before your big day, stop! You’re actually increasing the odds you’ll gain a few pounds! Keep hydrated and happy (and losing weight) by sipping on water, with or without lemon.

7

Enlist the Maid of Honor

You chose your Maid of Honor because she’s been your best friend as long as you can remember. She’s always been there for you, and you adore her. Why not ask for her support and encouragement now? She’ll support your effort to be fit and healthy, and she’ll provide motivation, inspiration, and a little nudge in the right direction when you’re tempted to skip the gym, or eat an entire cheesecake while watching “27 Dresses.” And who knows? She might be just as worried about losing weight to look great in her bridesmaid’s dress, too, so you can encourage her, too!

Keep in Mind…

You know what? Even if you didn’t lose an ounce before your wedding, you will still be gorgeous, and your husband-to-be will still adore you. You are, right now, exactly the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. If you’re healthy and fit, who cares about being skinny? Remember that this man will love you no matter what; five pounds plus or minus won’t make a difference to him.

As your Big Day approaches, I hope these little weight loss tips will help you look as gorgeous and beautiful as you feel! Remember, everyone at your wedding is there because they adore you, and they’re all going to think you’re the most beautiful bride they’ve ever seen… it’s all about the happy glow, after all! Which of these tips do you think will help most? Or do you have another idea to share?

Awesome tips, Jennifer! I'm in strong agreement that buying a dress that is too small because you hope to lose weight is only setting yourself up for potential disappointment, not to mention added expense.
