It is a good idea to know some ways to prevent honeymoon cystitis before you go on your honeymoon. Honeymoon cystitis is a bladder infection that you can get after having sex. 1. Drink Lots of Water
Drinking lots of water is one of the best ways to prevent honeymoon cystitis. The least little bit of dehydration can make you more susceptible to honeymoon cystitis. Keeping fluids constant in your body and making sure you are urinating frequently will help you be less likely to contract honeymoon cystitis. You need a minimum of 64 ounces of water per day. You need more if you drink caffeinated beverages or if you are losing a lot of fluids due to sweating.
2. Urinate before and after
It helps you avoid honeymoon cystitis if you urinate before and after sex. It is especially important to urinate after sex. Doing so makes sure that you flush out any bacteria that may have entered your urethra during sex. This helps tremendously in the fight against honeymoon cystitis. 3. Avoid Caffeinated Beverages
If you can, avoid caffeinated beverages while you are on your honeymoon or at least cut down on them. If you can’t completely cut them out, you might consider the decaffeinated version or a half and half mix. Caffeinated beverages are hard on your urinary system and make you more likely to get an infection. If you do drink them, be sure to drink an additional glass of water for each serving you have of a caffeinated beverage. This can greatly help you prevent honeymoon cystitis.
4. Take a Cranberry Pill
You can take a cranberry pill to help you prevent honeymoon cystitis. You can also take one if you are just starting to feel a little bit of bladder irritation. Sometimes it will help head an infection off. Cranberry juice can be helpful too, if you prefer to go that route. A pill is just a quicker and easier way to get your cranberry fix for the day.
5. Watch Your Sugar Intake
Consuming a lot of sugar can make you more likely to get a bladder infection of any kind or make it harder for one to go away. Sugar feeds the infection. This doesn’t mean that you can't enjoy a piece of cake or some chocolate truffles, after all you are on your honeymoon and you want to enjoy whatever you want to eat. But you should probably try to not overindulge. Maybe refrain from having a second piece of cake.
6. Don’t Wait to Urinate
If you feel like you need to urinate, do so as quickly as possible. Holding your urine is a huge no-no. You are already at risk of getting an infection simply by honeymooning and this habit will make you more likely to do so. Yes, it can be inconvenient having to look for a bathroom every couple of hours but it is much better than the alternative. Honeymoon cystitis is painful and very unpleasant.
7. Phone Your Doctor
If, despite your best efforts, you do feel like you are getting honeymoon cystitis, phone your doctor. They may be able to call you in a prescription of antibiotics to a local pharmacy. Some doctors will even give you a prescription to take with you on your honeymoon just in case you start feeling symptoms, so you can start treating it before it gets too bad. Worst case scenario, if you can’t reach your doctor and are sure something is not right in that area, find a local urgent care center. The symptoms of honeymoon cystitis are the same as any other bladder infection. They include burning, urgency, low back pain and cloudy urine.
