You cannot make sure that they will be completely happy, but you can be aware of the things that typically cause them to be unhappy wedding guests and do what you can to prevent that. It is certainly your day, but you also don’t want anyone to have a miserable day. These are just a few things you can keep in mind to try to make sure everyone enjoys the day and has good memories of it.

1. The Cost to Attend is Too High

(Your reaction) Thank you!

One thing that makes for unhappy wedding guests is if the cost to attend is too high. Some of the factors in this are ones that you cannot control. But there are a few things that you can keep in mind. If you are having a destination wedding, you can consider what each guest will have to pay to attend. You can think about what you can do to keep the costs affordable in other situations, too.

2. The Food is Bad

(Your reaction) Thank you!

Bad food doesn’t make anyone happy. You cannot cater to everyone and make sure that everyone loves the menu. That is just impossible. But what you can do is make sure that you sample things that are going to be served before your wedding day and make sure that you like them. It is a good idea to have a few others sample the dishes as well so you have a larger poll of opinions to draw from.

3. You Asked for Cash

(Your reaction) Thank you!

Most guests do not like to be asked for cash. They find it offensive. It is absolutely fine to let your guests know that cash is welcome if they do not have a gift in mind but to insist on cash only is considered rude by the majority of people. Providing a gift registry is also a nice thing to do to help aid them in their quest for a gift for you. Registries are always appreciated.

4. Lack of a Thank You Card

(Your reaction) Thank you!

Thank you cards are still very much a part of wedding etiquette. They are a chore that few people enjoy tackling but they let your guests know that their gift was appreciated. Guests tend to be offended if they don’t receive one. It only takes a few moments to write a thank you card for each guest. It can make a big difference in their feelings about your wedding and make sure they remember it fondly.

5. Being Kept Waiting Excessively

(Your reaction) Thank you!

Guests understand that you need to take time for photos and other things immediately following the wedding. But if that wait stretches out tremendously, you may have some unhappy wedding guests on your hands. Try to not keep them waiting any longer than an hour if you can help it at all. You might even want to consider having some sort of entertainment for the guests while you are waiting. Even some music can help pass the time for them.

6. Being Too Hot or Too Cold

(Your reaction) Thank you!

You cannot control the weather and that is completely understandable, but the temperature inside the location of your wedding and reception are under your control, at least to a certain extent. It is important to keep it a comfortable temperature to the best of your ability. And generally people would prefer it be a bit on the cool side versus a bit on the hot side. People tend to get cranky when it is too hot.

7. Being Too Crowded

(Your reaction) Thank you!

When I say that being too crowded is a common guest complaint, I am not referring to how many guests you have at your wedding. I am referring to not having enough space for all of your guests which leads to them feeling crowded. There is nothing worse than feeling squished in a pew or bumping elbows all through the reception. If you are going to have a large number of guests, be sure to leave adequate room for all of them. They will be very grateful for that consideration.

These are 7 things that typically make for unhappy wedding guests and some things you can do to prevent that from happening. Do you have other suggestions on how to keep your guests happy? I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject!
